Also Coming Soon: Craving Bad

Published March 22, 2017 by Jennifer Loring

To take the bad with the good has never been this tempting…

We all need it. We all crave it. The unexpected. The freedom of letting all your inhibitions go. It’s the thrill of being led to the edge, testing the limits, wondering if and when you’ll be pushed over. It’s the rush of the unknown. The bittersweet of tasting the forbidden when you know it’s undeniably bad for you. It consumes you, possesses you, and seduces you with its decadence, the desire for wickedly bad things.

Thirteen stories of sinfully seductive bad boys and scandalously wild bad girls—all ready to ignite your deepest desires by letting you experience the daring side of romance.

A blackmailing hacker. An infamous cage fighter. The Sergeant at Arms of a criminal MC. They’re breaking bad with shameless temptation…and they are downright irresistible.

Do you want to be taken to the edge? Do you ache for the thrill of experiencing how good bad can be?

Craving bad? Now’s your chance to indulge.

Coming May 23 from Limitless Publishing. Includes my new novelette “Paper Faces,” which takes place during the timeline of the first Firebird book.

Now What?

Published September 26, 2016 by Jennifer Loring

I’m at a weird point here in the final stages of 2016. I plan on sending the final book of The Firebird Trilogy to my publisher in November, and then…I have no idea what’s next.

Well, I do, sort of (and the next book will involve seeking an agent as well), but not in the sense I’ve had for the past two years, which is “You’re going to write the next book in the trilogy as soon as you’re done with this one.” I mean, I’ve taken time to write a short story or novella here and there, but I always knew exactly what the next big project was. For someone more comfortable with shorter fiction to have even written an entire trilogy–close to 233,000 words of it, before the third book gets one more go-round–is a feat in itself; to have done it in a genre that until two years ago was so far beyond my comfort zone I swore I’d never write in it is an accomplishment I’ll always be proud of.

But it leaves me in a bit of a sad spot, too. I can’t say I’ve ever felt quite like this in the eighteen years I’ve been in this business. It’s post-book depression, except I’m the writer instead of the reader. I’m saying goodbye to characters who feel like old friends. Alex in particular, who is easily my favorite character I’ve ever created, does not go quietly. He’s whispered about a spin-off novel, a prequel novella, and so on. On the other hand, this being my last contracted novel at the moment, I have the chance to work on a couple of pet projects, as well as finish up some things that have been on the back burner. And it’s been a pretty good year for me, with a novel, six short stories (so far), and two novellas published by the end of the year.

Right now, I’m working on two short stories for anthologies, and in the pipeline for next year I have a m/m shifter novella, a weird/cosmic horror novel that is a sort-of sequel to Those of My Kind, an ergodic steampunk novella, an urban fantasy/paranormal romance, and a superhero novel. I’m even tinkering with the idea of self-publishing a collection of my fairy tale retellings, fully revised and including a couple never before published. So it’s not that I don’t have plenty to work on; it’s choosing the one that will start to fill the hole left behind. And to be honest, I’m pretty excited about all of these things.

What project are you most curious about? Drop me a line in the comments–or, if you’re in the Philly area, come see me at Unmask the Romance on October 1, or Indie Author Day on October 8. I’d love to chat!

Lela E. Buis has been publishing prose and poetry in magazines and anthologies for a number of years and is a member of the Knoxville Writer’s Guild, the SFWA, and SFPA. Some years back, one of her stories finished as a quarter-finalist in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. She’s recently had four collections of short stories and poetry published by That Ridge press.

Things and Stuff

Published September 27, 2013 by Jennifer Loring

It has been brought to my attention that I suck at updating this blog. Honestly, I’ve been pretty busy for the past couple of months, and the last month in particular. So here’s a quick recap of everything that’s been going on since my last post.

1. I took over the “Doctor Who Project” column at HorrorNews. Whether I’ll still have time to maintain “Creature Profiles” is up for debate–and I haven’t written one of those in quite some time to begin with.

2. I interviewed for and was offered an internship at In Bliss here in Philadelphia. I just completed my 4th week and have about 8 weeks to go. I get to write content for their eZine, edit website content, and generally learn more about weddings than I ever anticipated. I am also master of their Spotify account, owing to my past as a DJ.

3. After completing my first day of the internship, I phone interviewed with Red Adept Publishing and landed a job as a line editor. I’m already on my second book, and my schedule is full for the foreseeable future. Which is good, because I’m getting paid to do something I love.

4. Waiting on submissions to Cemetery Dance, Tor.com, Samhain, Namel3ss, and DarkFuse. Hoping for good news. I’ve got two more stories needing to be typed up (yes, I still write most of my stuff long-hand), and I’ve started a new novella. Another novella is in need of revisions, and I’ve had a few false starts with my next novel, which is currently on the back burner until my internship is over and until I can figure out which book I’m actually trying to write.

5. I’m taking several classes through Coursera, since I can’t seem to break away from school just yet. Currently I’m enrolled in Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative. Next month I start Epidemics – the Dynamics of Infectious Diseases and Plagues, Witches, and War: The Worlds of Historical Fiction. It’s all free, and it’s a great opportunity to take classes not offered at your particular school.

I think that covers everything for now. I’ll try to update more often, I promise.
